Description
Gyrating chair. Historical artwork of a psychiatric patient being treated in a gyrating chair in a mental asylum. The chair, designed by American doctor Benjamin Rush (1746-1813), was thought to increase the blood supply to the brain. Rush was an influential physician who tried to establish humane conditions for the treatment of the insane and is regarded as the father of American psychiatry. However, he also believed that insanity could be cured by bleeding and purging the patient.
